May 2021 Sock Box Designer Spotlight

The May 2021 Sock Box Designer Spotlight this month is on...Evie Phelps! Some know Evie for her plant knowledge, but did you know she is an avid knitter?

Her Summer Infinity Scarf is our featured pattern using Southern Skeins Southern Sock yarn in the Cosmic colorway as the main color and Energy as the mini skein color.  This printed pattern is included for free inside the Sock Box.

With two decades of knitting under Evie’s belt now she writes patterns that are for everyone. First time doing lace? No problem! Low vision? No problem!

Evie personally struggled with dyslexia and for years. She thought it was a normal thing and everyone did! Then she took a class in college where the professor required everyone to use a font called “dyslexi” and it was amazing. Evie could read so quickly and remember so much!

So when COVID hit and suddenly everyone went virtual, Evie realized how tired her eyes were after a day of work. She had glasses since the 2nd grade, and knows her vision isn’t great. Normally Evie would print all of the things needed to read in a day, but that wasn’t possible while working from home with a printer from 2001.
With her dyslexia, Evie would rewrite patterns anyway. Abbreviations? No way! Row repeats? Gosh no! She started thinking “what if others didn’t have to rewrite patterns just to use them?” And that’s when Evie discovered the requirements for low visibility patterns. It’s like the world opened up again! Not only could she use the pattern without extra work, but she really understood it! There are way too few of these patterns out there, and Evie felt like she has a duty to help others by writing patterns which work for all makers!
